Buah Merah (Pandanus conoideus) is an endemic plant from Papua, that lives in the mountainous region of Jayawijaya mountains. It has been traditionally been used by the tribes in the Jayawijaya Mountains to cure eye and skin ailments.
Along the road, it has been found out that Buah Merah is also medically proven to help cure eye and skin ailments, due its richness in Essential Fatty Acids, Beta-carotene, Cryptoxanthin, Selenium and Tocopherol. (Rohman et al. 2012).
This became essential, as our daily exposure to the sun, slowly damages our skin cells and hastens aging. 80% of the case this damage is caused by free radicals that is formed from the UV ray radiation (Poljšak and Dahmane, 2012). Therefore, the high dose of Beta-carotene found on Buah Merah is very essential in order to relieve the problems that may occur due to the exposure to the sun(Stahl and Sies, 2012). This is done through the scavenging of free radical that is the characteristic of Betacaroteneas an antioxidant. In addition to that Tocopherol acts as a stabilizer to skin cells and is active in repairing inflammation of skin (Makrantonaki and Zoubolis, 2008). Last but not least, Essential fatty acid prevents early aging and antioxidants (Cosgrove et al., 2007).
